Notes
  • Steve Brown tapes #35, #36, #36.5 [tapes #32-#34 undated]
  • Both #145773 and the (extremely similar) Backus fileset #10111 contained a mix of material from this date and 4.17. In order to disambiguate we have assumed anything without Garcia is from 4.17.
  • This set features an unusual repertoire and a very forward presence from both Ned and David Crosby. John Cippolina is also present and performs. Homeward Through the Haze and Low Down Payment are Croz tunes featuring outro jams seemingly arranged by Ned; No Name and Ned’s #2 are Lagin compositions intended for a second Seastones album (see Nedbase). Low Down Payment becomes a continuing story for awhile in these sessions.
  • Ned Lagin, speaking about this date in an interview by David Gans, broadcast on the GD Hour and circulating on #10509 listed above: “The session was originally a potentially a Grateful Dead rehearsal session, which got canceled. When those got canceled, Phil and I would set up in in the studio to do Seastones work for up and coming gigs that we had at Dominican college and Palace of Fine Arts and and so this turned into a into, quote, a “Seastones” unquote session. But since it was my birthday, I got to call the shots as it were, and I wanted to jam on a bunch of tunes. David Crosby, I called that morning. He had the habit of showing up for some of these jams and rehearsals. And this was not a SNACK rehearsal, as it's possibly listed in the in the [Tapers’ Compendium] book. But David showed up because we were going to do some Seastones work, which we did do later. And John Cippolina was invited also, and he did show up later.”
  • Keith Godchaux was not present; Ned was the only keyboard player. Bob Weir doesn’t play on some material - the details of that still need to be parsed. Cippolina showed up later in the day. Thus for at least some of the material here the lineup is Lagin - Lesh - Crosby - Garcia - Kreutzmann.
