Notes
  • The March 4, 5, 6 sessions all have speculative dating; the dates are likely correct but the boundaries between them are blurry. This batch of material went into circulation dated as “March 1975” in 2018 from some combination of Steve Brown tapes #18-#30, though there are places when the breaks between tapes and dates become unclear. We come to our current dating through a few signposts. David Browne listened to Brown’s masters while researching his book So Many Roads, citing a conversation about the death of Lenny Hart as March 5th and is seemingly confirmed by a later conversation in which Bob Weir asks what day of the week it is, the answer being “Wednesday.” Dating of “March 6th” session dependent on it beginning immediately following the end of March 5th tape (with aforementioned Weir conversation).
  • Complicating factor: David Gans aired a take of “Distorto” dated March 5th with matches up to our “March 4th” tape, which means the start of the session could stretch back further than our current break (or tapes perhaps not transferred in chronological sequence). 3 hours of music from March 5th (between the conversation about Lenny Hart and Weir’s “Wednesday” question) seem to be contained on 2 tapes, which makes sense as 2 90-minute tapes. Thus where the break is exactly between March 4th and 5th is unclear.
