Beyond Description (1973-1989) lists Groove #1, Groove #2, A to E Flat Jam (aka Blue Noodle Soup), and Proto 18 Proper as coming from 2/27, but sonic comparison tells us the Grooves and Proto really come from this date.
Steve Brown’s calendar from February is not preserved among his papers at the Grateful Dead Archive, but his tape collection does not contain tapes for 2/27. The many of the performances included on Beyond Description are all edits of material that appears on Brown’s tapes of February 28th, as transferred by David Gans. Another theory holds that the "2/27" tapes used on Beyond Description tape source are in the Dead’s vault precisely because they’re missing from Brown’s collection. But the two sets of tapes seemingly contain the same material, so more likely one of them is misdated. Given our reliance on Steve Brown’s dating for the rest of the material, we here at the Department of Pedantics lean towards Brown.
